About Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are usually porcelain devices attached over the teeth to prevent further tooth decay. Crowns make the teeth stringer and more attractive. They are designed to match the appearance of the teeth and to look entirely natural. A well-executed dental crown job can last up to 8 years. In case the patient takes care of the crowns then it can even last a decade.

One of the major precautions is that a patient should not grind the teeth, chew ice or bite fingernails and exercise good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth with toothpaste meant for sensitive teeth.

If after having your teeth crowned, you feel pain, sensitivity to hot, or cold, then you should contact your dentist. There may be a chance that the crowns have been set too high on the teeth. In that case, the dentist will fix the problem.

Although very rare, there are chances that the cement that attaches the crown onto the teeth may wash off. In case this happens, the crown becomes loose. If this happens then also the patient should visit the dentist and get the problem fixed. A loose crown can cause decay to the underlying tooth.

Such problems are rare and usually happen if the patient does not follow the dentist’s recommendations. The patient should not chew on hard foods or ice and should brush and flow their teeth regularly. Patients should not use a toothpick or a hard object to pick the teeth. Particles stuck between teeth should be removed only by flossing.

Dental crowns can be made of materials such as gold or porcelain. Gold crowns are very easy to fit on to teeth. Gold crowns do not harm other teeth when they rub against them. The only problem with gold crowns is that many people are not comfortable with the way they will look after getting a gold crown placed on their tooth.

Porcelain on the other hand looks natural. Placing a porcelain crown is more difficult for a dentist as he dentist has to remove a larger part of the existing tooth’s structure to place such a crown.
