Almost every person has suffered from toothache at least once in a lifetime. A toothache occurs suddenly and then the ache increases gradually and becomes persistent. Then it may happen that it becomes unbearable. So, what should an individual do when faced with such an eventuality?
When toothache persists or increases till it becomes unbearable, the only reasonable action to take is to visit a qualified dentist’s clinic as soon as is possible. A precaution worth taking is to avoid using aspirin for a toothache. This is because aspirin is bad for the gums as it can burn the tissue of the gums.
Several reasons are attributable for toothaches. Therefore, only a qualified dentist can diagnose a specific issue that may have resulted in a toothache and only he/she has the expertise to treat it.
Toothaches can be prevented by going in for dental cleanings and dental checkups.
A toothache appears a small issue when compared with a dental emergency. A dental emergency may arise because of a broken tooth, possibly a broken jaw, knocked out teeth due to an impact or a blow, bitten tongue or lip, or something caught between teeth.
If the dental emergency is due to a broken tooth, the first action to take would be to rinse the mouth using warm water and then apply a cold compress to the affected area to minimize swelling there. Then visit a qualified dentist.
If the dental emergency is due to suspicion of a broken jaw, the first action to take would be to apply a cold compress to the affected area to minimize swelling there. Then visit the emergency section of a good dental hospital or a qualified dentist.
In case a person’s tooth or two have been knocked off as a result of an impact or a blow, clean rinse the affected teeth, without removing any attached tissue or scrubbing the affected teeth. If possible, an attempt can also be made to replace the affected teeth back in their respective sockets. Otherwise, the teeth need to be carried to a qualified dentist immediately by the person whose teeth have been knocked off.
A bitten tongue or lip also is part of a dental emergency. In such a case, wipe clean the affected area with a clean cloth. Apply a clean compress to the affected area to minimize swelling there. In case bleeding does not cease, a visit to the nearest hospital emergency room will be necessitated.
Sometimes, an object may become lodged between two teeth, which may be difficult to dislodge without the help of a dentist. If possible, an attempt may be made to remove the object by use of a dental floss piece or through use of a dental flosser. It is important not to allow the floss to cut gum tissue. Further, the precaution of not using a sharp object to dislodge a foreign object trapped between two teeth needs to be taken.
