Poor Oral Health in Young Kids
Childhood is that time of our life when lack of proper dental care can ruin our oral health for the rest of the life. Hence, it is important that oral health is closely monitored. Visit a dentist if you come across any of the following oral problems in your child.

* Decayed Teeth: the first set of teeth in a child serve as the pattern in which the new set would be aligned. Decayed teeth or missing teeth in young children can cause a misalignment or crookedness in the next set of teeth that would appear in the child. Such a set of teeth would not only look ugly but would hamper chewing of food and would also cost a small fortune to get them repaired.

* Nursing Bottle Syndrome: This type of tooth decay sets in when a young child takes in a sugar-rich food substitute almost incessantly. The high level of sugar present in the child's diet then causes decay of baby teeth. The sugar that would remain on the teeth and between the gum and teeth would encourage the growth of bacteria and this would ruin the child's oral health. The only way out of this situation is by giving young children a pacifier or a bottle of water.

* Thumb sucking: While thumb-sucking has been seen as a perfectly natural phenomenon in young babies, it becomes a cause of concern once permanent teeth have developed in a child. Thumb sucking by children with permanent teeth can cause many problems. Misalignment of teeth (caused by the shifting of the underlying bone structure) is the most common of them.

Misalignment of teeth caused by thumb sucking can have both visible as well as invisible negative impact. The teeth of the child can protrude in an ugly manner and the child can also face difficulty while biting. The child may also encounter difficulty in sound articulation. He/she may not be able to speak out some words that require a proper alignment of teeth.

Thumb sucking can be stopped in some ways. To being, you can make the child give up this habit by rewarding him/her when he/she is not sucking thumb. Further, since thumb sucking is an expression of seeking comfort and security you can try to find out if the child is suffering from any type of insecurity. Addressing that might be able to help the child give this habit.

* Tongue Thrusting: This dental condition appears when the child thrusts its tongue on the lips with more force than is required. If this becomes a chronic pattern then it causes the protrusion of the teeth. In order to correct this anomaly it is recommend that parents take their children to speech pathologists.
