Supplemental Dental Insurance Plans and Schemes
Supplemental dental Insurance plans are meant to fill a certain void that is left by many health insurance plans that do offer a certain level of dental coverage, but does not cover a number of dental expenses. You may be covered under a group insurance plan at the place you work. Nevertheless, you can opt for a supplemental discount plan if your group insurance scheme does not cover certain expenses.

As the phrase suggests supplemental dental insurance is meant to augment your primary dental insurance and not replace it. There are certain costs that your primary health insurance plans leave out.
There are different types of supplemental health insurance plans. These are discussed below.

Discounted Student Dental Plans
A number of colleges put their students under a discounted student dental plan. Colleges put the students under such plans as a part of student welfare. This is because college students are usually above 18, an age after which they are no longer covered by their parent’s dental plan. These dental plans offer students coverage on essential dental expenses such as fillings, cleaning and any emergency dental treatment.

Dental discount Plans
Although such plans are not insurance plans in the strictest sense, these plans do offer subscribers heavy discounts on dentist fees and other expenses, provided the subscribers avail of services of dentists from a pre-defined list. The subscriber gets a card upon enrollment in such a plan and has to present the card when visiting the dentist. Such plans are very inexpensive and may cost as little as $5 a month.

Dental Insurance Preferred Provider Network
This type of dental insurance allows the subscriber to choose from a dentist who is apart of the network defined as per the plan. The subscriber is free to switch their preferred dentist as per wish, provided the dentist is on the list or network. Such plans generally set the subscriber back by 15 to 20 dollars per month.
