The American Dental Association says that in a number of cases dentists prescribe treatment which the insurance plan would not cover. The best approach is to make yourself aware of such things before you get the insurance. The association also points out a number of instances where insurance would only make provision for a part of treatment. In some cases the individual may be able to negotiate with the insurer to cover proper treatment but banking upon such a possibility is not a great idea.
The insurance plans are generally offered in the form of buyers’ clubs or referral plans. In this case the treatment cost is still born by the individual. The plan does not involve any provision of payment to dentist. To get such a plan you would need some efforts on the part of plan sponsor-- generally your employer.
Before subscribing to a plan:
One important thing that everyone who plans to get dental insurance should consider is to make sure that plan provides for the treatment of one person only or for the entire family. It is important to realize that your dentist can not provide all the answers related to the future dental care needs. You must keep in mind to clear as many things with the insurer beforehand instead of waiting till anything untoward happens. Another important thing to know is that all the dentists may not be covered under one particu-lar plan. Any individual who is already consulting a dentist should check beforehand if his dentist is covered or not. It is also better to check the provision of treatment from unlisted dentists.
In case of multiple insurance holders in one family:
In a number of cases more than one member of the family, generally both the husband and wife would have dental insurance. In this case the birthday rule becomes applicable. Whichever plan holder has earlier birthday according to calendar year becomes the primary person insured and his or her policy covers the children. Some plans may even provide the option of collaborative benefit.
The Rule of Predetermination of Benefits:
Another important thing is to make sure that in most cases the ‘rule of predetermination of benefits’ would become applicable. The dentist would be required to get in touch with the dental insurance com-pany and inform them about the required treatment. While this predetermination does not guarantee payment it should be up to the individual and the dentist to proceed with the therapy or not.
The dental insurance benefits are delivered through Direct Reimbursement, Preferred Provider Organi-zation, Capitation and a number of other ways. It is a must that every individual should take proper care of his dental health and dental insurance is a great tool for this yet thoroughly understanding the plan before subscribing to it is the most intelligent thing to do.
