Tooth Whitening has its own share of Disadvantages!
Bleaching of teeth promise to restore the whiteness of our teeth just like the way they were in childhood. However, this may not be true and you should not get carried away by the claim. Tooth bleaching will also not lighten and create a uniform color with crowns, bridges and other dental implants. It varies in case of stains caused due to mineral contamination and deposit. Areas of white at the root canal and below gums will also not be restored.

If there are any dark or metallic fillings in the oral cavity, tooth bleaching will also be of no use. Care should also be taken that the patient is not a lactating or pregnant mother. Whitening is also not suggested for smokers, alcoholics or children below the age of 13 years. It will also not be effective for patients fitted with translucent teeth.

The possible disadvantages of tooth whitening-
The only known side-effect that patients who have undergone bleaching may experience is to receive certain bouts of sensitivity to any kind of temperature change in the mouth, such as heat, cold, pressure and alike. Patients with decaying gums have the likelihood of receiving such dental pain. But, it will persist for a maximum duration of one to three days after the process of whitening is complete. Further usage of a fluoride paste or paste of potassium nitrate gives you a 90 % assurance in the deduction of the pain, if the problem persists.
