Eight Darned Good Reasons to Floss Your Teeth |
Many people are under the impression that brushing their teeth and using mouthwash occasionally is all that they need to do to take care of their teeth. This is in spite of their dentist advising them to floss their teeth everyday or at least three times a week.
People underestimate or simply fail to understand the need to floss their teeth. Brushing the teeth is undoubtedly important. Flossing the teeth is almost equally important. Let us take a look at why we need to floss the teeth.
The following are the reasons we require to flow our teeth.
1. Mere brushing does not remove tartar, a film that forms between the teeth and gums. Tartar is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria that give rise to dental caries and gum disease. Flossing can help to remove tartar especially between the gaps of the teeth and other places that a toothbrush cannot reach.
2. Your mouth and teeth are a fertile breeding ground for over 500 different types of bacteria. Flossing helps to remove the thin film or residue called plaque that breeds bacteria.
3. Brushing does not dislodge solid particles from difficult to reach areas in your teeth. The only alternative of removing food particles from such areas of your teeth is flossing.
4. Regular flossing helps to prevent gingivitis a form of gum disease that if left untreated can result in periodontitis.
5. Latest research has establishes a causal link between gum disease and the state of our teeth with heart disease and coronary problems.
The last point should definitely make people think about the importance of flossing our teeth and its role in maintaining the health of our body.
Remember that brushing helps to clean our teeth from the front and the back of the teeth. Brushing cannot clean the difficult to reach areas between the teeth. |
