The Bitter Connection Between Sugar and Your Teeth
There are several things that can cause damage to your teeth over a period of time. Sugar is one of the most common tooth damage triggers around, sometimes resulting in to irreparable harm. Here, we take a look at how it spoils your teeth and what you can do about it.

Why does sugar cause teeth issues?
Sugar helps plaque creating bacteria survive within the mouth. It acts as a form of nourishment which is eventually converted by the bacteria into acids; which in turn corrodes the enamel present on the tooth. The amount of decay is largely dependant on the amount of time period for which the sugar remains in contact with the bacteria colony. The amount of the substance consumed is less important here.

Plaque and sugar
This thin sticky substance usually forms on your teeth after a meal. The substance is mostly formed upon consumption of carbohydrate or sugar heavy foods or food debris left within the mouth. The plaque may form acids if they are not removed and these acids in turn can erode the teeth enamel thereby causing cavities. Some plaques may also lead to gum disease such as gingivitis.

Preventing sugar from hurting your teeth
Limit your intake of sugary sweets: candies, cookies and sodas should be avoided as much as possible to maintain good oral hygiene. Sweets which stay in the mouth for a long time such as hard or sticky chewy candies are more harmful to your teeth than their other counterparts. Healthier snack choices such as raw fruits and vegetables, whole grain foods, crackers, cheeses and nuts are a better snacking option if you absolutely must satisfy your indulgence cravings.

Practice good oral hygiene: brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day will help prevent any damage resulting from sugar intake. Brush the tooth surfaces as well as the tongue to eliminate both- bacteria and plaque. Flossing after brushing your teeth is also recommended.

Get Regular checkups: regular appointments at the dentists will help you stay updated about your oral health. Cleaning process twice a year by a dental hygienist will help remove any plaque accumulated below the gum line and also eliminate any tartar present on the teeth. The checkups will also help detect early signs of tooth decay which will enable a quick fix before further damage is done.

Beware of sugars which are not quite obvious: sugars may not come in obvious forms of candy and sweets. Dried fruits, for example have a lot of concentrated sugar which can stick to your teeth just like candy. Similarly, juice contains as much sugar as a soda and therefore needs to be avoided as well. Ideally, you should also keep away from starchy foods.

Thus, while sugar does have the potential to create tooth problems, adherence to the above given advice can help you combat any issues pertaining to your dental health.
